Augusto Monterroso

-La palabra mágica-

"Es imposible traducir la poesía. ¿Acaso se puede traducir la música?"

Voltaire

"Translating poetry is like making jewelry. Every word counts, and each sparkles with so many facets. Translating prose is like sculpting: get the shape and the lines right, then polish the seams later."

James Nolan

La realidad y el deseo

a Luis Cernuda

Reality and desire

a Luis Cernuda

Reality, yes, reality
the lightening flash of the invisible
that reveals in us the solitude of God.

It is the sky that escapes
it is the territory adorned by the bubbles of death
it is this long table drifting
where the guests continue to be dressed up with the prestige of not being there
A goblet for each one
to measure the wine that ends where the thirst starts
A plate for each one
to confine the hunger that extinguishes but it is never satisfied.
And for each peer, the division of the bread
the miracle overturned, communion only with the impossible
An in the middle of love,
between one body and the other, the fall
something that seems like the sullen throb of wings that returns from eternity,
at the pulse of a farewell underneath the earth.

Reality, yes, reality
A seal of closure on all desire’s gates.

Olga Orozco -En el final era el verbo-
En el final era el verbo

(...)

At the final it was the verb

(...)
I kept watch encrusted in burning ice, in frosted fire,
translating lighting, unthreading dynasties of words,
in a code as indecipherable as that of stars of ants.
I looked at words against the light
I saw their dark offspring parade by till the end of the world.
I wanted to discover God in transparency.

Olga Orozco -Miss Havisham-
Miss Havisham

Miss Havisham

Here lies Miss Havisham,
disappointment’s lavish vanity.
One day she dressed for happiness with her gown of death,
not knowing.
In the precise hour for reaching the music of a dream
violently someone cut the lying strings of love
and she came undone, falling toward darkness like a broken cloud.
Everything was sealed up.
Access forbidden to the space where a hollow bride gathered in the
name of hate the frozen remains of her heart.
He who entered was chosen for the blind expiation of all weeping.
It was forbidden to lift the seals.
The hands of light would have dispersed the elegant floating apparel,
the table lace eaten away by insects’ tenacious dynasties,
the waters of the mirror still undisturbed after the last image had
fallen,
the deserted places where dinner guests would be the impassive kin
gathered around the disinterred,
around the shriveled bride still glowing in vengeance and in scorn.
Now at last she is dead.
Enter please.
That is the scene the years have held in the proud dust of patience,
the sumptuous warp where she fell like a tapestry wrapped in the
flames of her death.
It was a splendid blaze.
Yes. No better fire than vain aridity,
that murky hell where she eternally will burn,
as Pip arrives and writes beneath her name: “she is forgiven.”

Olga Orozco -Espejo en lo alto-
Espejo en lo alto

A Alberto Girri

No sé si habrás logrado componer tu escritura
prolijos ideogramas en este desmantelado atardecer;
o el apremiante latido del corazón a oscuras;
Imposible saber. No consigo abarcar lo que me sobrepasa y te contiene;
acechando visiones contagiosas, insectos y peligros y ratones.
e una casa oscilante, en continuo equilibrio,
justo en el borde de la inmensidad;

Mirror on high

to Alberto Girri

I don’t know if you’ve managed to compose your verses
with that meticulous tapestry of errant leaves that used to bring order to hollows and reliefs,
tidy ideograms on this stripped-down dawn;
nor do I know if in the past few months you spoke to me
with that frozen tinkle of glass, with the murmur of wicker,
or the hurried beat of the heart in the dark;
and perhaps that agate’s circular gaze was your gaze,
which from water in the air unfolds itself, expands itself, amplifies itself
beyond stone, beyond resplendence, beyond the world.
Impossible to know. I’m not able to embrace that which exceeds me and includes you;
I cannot suddenly decipher unfamiliar signs.
Because you’ve now totally broken through the region of deliriums and emanations,
where the jungle and the stalkers of the jungle are jumbled together,
and days are stained with the color of what no longer is, and will not be,
and between a body and its shadow the wind overturns twenty centuries of history
and in one hand and the other the seeds of uncertainty multiply,
and around one foot and the other the serpents of contradiction tie themselves into knots.
Because such is the proof and such are the intrigues of the dissembler—
inaccessible reality.
Not in vain did you strip the petals off the wrapping of sleep and wakefulness,
word by word, absence by presence,
down to the last petal, to the motionless trembling of silence.
Did you perhaps examine—feeling, poking through the weaves of the poem—
both the reverse and front sides of destiny,
the knots of mistakes, the illusory embroidery,
without encountering that pure transparency that allows a look at the other side?
Your strength was in inhabiting the house of countless labyrinths in the Kingdom of No,
testing the entrances, stalking the exits,
lying in wait for infectious visions, insects and perils and mice.
It was a house that swung back and forth, in continuous equilibrium,
just on the edge of immensity;
and there you lived in alertness, rehearsing for absence, set loose from yourself—
your first person singular each time always further off,
always closer to some other you—,
being the hunter that simultaneously finds his prey and calls off the chase,
and the bird that tries to send memories of the earth into exile through the beating of its wings.
You are already part of everything in another realm, the Kingdom of Permanence and Unity,
you are in the eternal present that flees, that is consumed and doesn’t end,
and you will at last be able to be both the name and the one named.
But I know that almost half a century of friendship, constancy, emotions and shelter
is not enough for me to find that a small footprint,
a suspended spark, a floating perfume,
are—in the middle of the anonymous universal choir, the present moment—
your way of dictating to me the most just, the most beautiful and the most truthful,
like before, like always, with a gesture, with a talisman, with a tear.
And if that were so, how to respond?
Out of my parted lips, from my grief and my ignorance I can only beg:
“Lord, make your son be like the most uncontaminated of all your mirrors
and show him things as he would want them to be,
just as they are.
